1. Purpose

National University Corporation Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) and National University Corporation Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) have reached an agreement on the merger of the two national university corporations and their universities, Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Tokyo Institute of Technology, to form one national university corporation and one university. The two parties signed the “Basic Agreement on Integration of Corporations and Universities” on October 14, 2022.

The name of the new university should be in line with the purpose of the integration and the target organizational culture described in the basic agreement. We look forward to your ideas for the new name.

4. How to make a proposal

1)    Go to the designated online form from the link below, and enter required items:
a)    Name of the new university to propose (in Japanese): Required (Japanese form), Optional (English form)
b)    Name of the new university to propose (in English): Optional (Japanese form), Required (English form)
c)    Short name (abbreviation, etc.) of the new university to propose (in Japanese): Optional (Japanese/English form)
d)    Short name (abbreviation, etc.) of the new university to propose (in English): Optional (Japanese/English form)
e)    Meaning/reason for name up to 300 characters in Japanese / 150 words in English: Required (Japanese/English form)
f)    Proposer’s status (TMDU/Tokyo Tech, student/faculty and staff/alumnus, other)

Important: Please make sure that the name you propose is 1) appropriate as a university name, 2) suitable for the goals and target organizational culture of the new university. 

Reference: Standards for Establishment of Universities (set by the Japanese government)
Article 40-4: Names of universities, faculties and departments (hereinafter referred to as "universities, etc.") are to be appropriate as those for universities, etc. and suitable for the purpose of the education and research by the relevant universities, etc.
 

5. Decision-making and announcement of the new university name

The joint preparatory committee of the two university corporations will decide on a draft name for the new university. Proposals collected will be taken into account, but we will not look at the number of suggestions for respective proposed names. A final decision on the draft name will be made with approval by the respective boards of directors of the two university corporations. The draft name of the new university will be announced on the websites of the two universities in January 2023. However, we will not disclose the deliberation and decision-making process, including whether we received proposals for the chosen draft name (and the names of the proposers). 

6. Terms

(1)    A proposal will be invalid if it fails to provide required information, contains false information, or is not submitted during the designated period for proposals.  
(2)    Personal information provided by proposers will be strictly managed and solely used for the purpose of deliberation for the new university name. 
(3)    The copyrights (including the rights stipulated in Articles 27 and 28 of the Copyright Act (Act No. 48 of 1970)), the right to register a trademark, and all other rights related to names put forward by proposers, etc. will belong to National University Corporation Tokyo Medical and Dental University and National University Corporation Tokyo Institute of Technology. In addition, proposers shall not exercise their rights under moral rights or file trademark applications against the two university corporations or third parties designated by the two university corporations.
(4)    In the event of any problems with copyrights or any other rights related to a name put forward by proposers, etc., the proposed name may be corrected or modified for use.
(5)    Proposals that offend public order and morals, contain defamation, or violate copyrights and other rights of third parties will be excluded.
(6)    Proposals must be unpublished creation by the proposer, not anything created based on or imitating copyrighted work of others. 
(7)    There will be no awards or ceremonies for proposers.
