Report for Science Tokyo International Faculty Development Course AY2024

International Faculty Development Course AY2024

A four-day International Faculty Development Course took place successfully from February 3rd to 6th 2025.
Participants were able to update not only their knowledge of dental clinical techniques and research knowledge but also learn new practical clinical/research skills during this course, which might be beneficial for their future careers.

●Day 1: February 3, Monday
(9:30-10:45 JST)
Opening ceremony and Science Tokyo Hospital Tour
by Dr. Kanamori

Participants were able to observe clinics inside Institute of Science Tokyo Hospital.
The tour included clinics for undergraduate students, residents and Prosthodontic treatment.
Participants were able to observe the Real Mode Studio, a digital CAD-CAM laboratory and Center for Advanced Interdisciplinary Dentistry inside the Hospital. The tour also included a visit inside the new Intensive Care Unit/High Care Unit.
 (10:45-11:45 JST)
Lecture:
"A direct resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis pre-pontic assisted procedure technique using a digital workflow"
by Dr. Hatayama

Participants were able to learn how digital scanning in conjunction with the latest adhesive techniques and composite resin developments can be used to replace single missing teeth using direct composite resin. Tips on how to develop accurate surface morphology in order to give composite resin restorations optimum esthetics were also shared.
(13:00-15:15 JST)
Observation of Live operation: Periodontology
by Drs. Mizutani, Maekawa and Yano

Participants observed the live feed of a periodontal surgical procedure involving periodontal tissue regeneration of an intrabony defect using Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2) and were able to discuss the procedure with the surgeons.
●Day 2: February 4, Tuesday
(9:30-12:30 JST)
Lectures:
"Metal-free fixed prosthodontic restorations" -Dr. Komada
"Cutting edge of digital dentures" -Dr. Kanazawa
"Basic principles for ideal implant placement -posterior missing cases-" -Drs. Marukawa, Shibasaki and Maekawa

Participants were able to learn about the advantages of using resin core and fibre posts over metal post and cores and full-arch reconstructions using all-ceramic restorations. Advanced facial scanning techniques were presented, which could be superimposed on simulated tooth set-ups for complete dentures resulting in much better communication of the patient's details with the laboratory. Participants also learnt about the key principles for successful implant placement in posterior edentulous areas in these lectures.
 (13:30-16:00 JST)
Hands-on: Cariology and operative dentistry - "Perfect matrix works 2025"
by Dr. Hatayama

Participants practiced restoring proximal posterior cavities using the latest matrix systems to create precise and accurate contact points. The latest techniques in adhesive dentistry were taught together with recently developed flowable composite resins, which allow for accurate recreation of occlusal morphology.
●Day 3: February 5, Wednesday
(9:30-12:00 JST)
Hands-on: Complete denture prosthodontics - "Border molding for mandibular complete dentures"
by Dr. Kanazawa and Dr. Komagamine

Participants were able to learn the rational for precise and accurate recording of the surrounding oral tissues during the fabrication of complete dentures and practiced correct adjustment of special trays and handling of specially-developed silicone impression materials for easy and accurate reproduction of the intra-oral sulci.
(13:00-15:30 JST)
Hands-on: Fixed Prosthodontics - "Direct resin core build-up method using custom crown form"
by Dr. Komada and Dr. Oishi

Participants practiced fabricating custom direct resin cores and fibre posts using the latest adhesive techniques and dual-cure resin core materials. Precise abutment tooth preparation and intra-oral scanning techniques were also practiced and refined.
●Day 4: February 6, Thursday
(9:30-12:00 JST)
Hands-on: Periodontology - "Crown lengthening and periodontal surgery"
by Drs. Mizutani, Maekawa and Yano

Participants refined their skills in periodontal scaling and learnt how to perform periodontal surgical pocket elimination using an apically repositioned flap in a simulated situation.
(13:00-15:00 JST)
Hands-on: Orthodontics - "A treatment for Class l crowding case using sliding Mechanics"
by Dr. Yonemitsu

Participants learnt how to handle and ligate arch wires using typodont teeth. The orthodontic techniques of levelling, canine distal driving using a power chain and anterior retraction, were taught and practiced using typodont teeth in models.
(15:00 JST-)
Closing ceremony
