International Exchange and Visiting Student / 海外交流・訪問学生

Science Tokyo accepts students from outside Japan who are studying Medicine, Dentistry, Health Care Sciences, or Oral Health Care Sciences for short periods (1 year or less, non-degree). Interested students can find useful information on this page.This page provides information relating solely to medical and dental and scinences fields.

General information

*We only accept entries for Research in medicine from Partner Universities with Science Tokyo.
*Applicants must complete their studies at their home university or institution after the period of study in Japan. 
*Depending on the timing and the number of participants, there is a possibility that the program may be conducted jointly with other universities. If you have any concerns, please feel free to consult with us in advance. 
*April marks the start of the new academic year in Japan, and many research laboratories and clinical departments are often unable to accept international students, particularly during the last week of March and the first week of April. In addition, many research laboratories and clinical departments are often unable to accept international students during the traditional Japanese summer holiday in August, and the university administrative offices will also be closed. Applicants who have yet to decide on the duration of their study abroad period should bear this in mind.

Clinical Electives in Medicine

Science Tokyo offers clinical clerkships in Medicine, where participants can observe the daily routine in an outpatient clinical setting, attend conferences, and take part in other activities (exact activities may vary depending on the affiliated department). Please note that medical records and communication with patients will only be written or conducted in Japanese. Clinical Electives in Medicine for International Exchange/Visiting Students are offered year round except April. We only accept entries from Partner Universities with Science Tokyo.

Clinical Electives in Dentistry

Science Tokyo offers clinical dentistry observerships. Participants can observe the daily routine in an outpatient clinical setting and hospital wards (exact activities may vary depending on the affiliated department). Clinical electives in Dentistry are offered for a duration of one week. Please note that each university permits only one application per academic year. Our university can accept up to six students annually (Exceptions may be made if there is a separate agreement or memorandum of understanding).

Tuition

- Tuition fee: 29,700 JPY / month (*Fees for partner university students will be based on the partner agreement terms)
- These fees do not include accommodation, travel, or daily living costs in Japan.
- Tuition fees must be paid in cash on the first day of your visit to Science Tokyo.

*If the stay spans multiple months, you will need to pay the tuition fee for each month. (For example, if the stay is from January 31 to March 1, which spans three months, you will be required to pay the tuition fee for three months (29,700 × 3)).
 

Visa and status of residence

- For information on visa requirements, please visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan or consult with the Japanese Embassy in your country of residence.
- Science Tokyo will not provide advice regarding a student’s visa status or requirements.
 

Accommodation & transportation

Science Tokyo does not provide accommodations for international exchange and visiting students. Students are responsible for their own living arrangements and transportation to and from the university.

Immunization records

If you participate in any activities within our university hospital, submission of immunization records is required. Please review the following information carefully.
Please refer to the guidelines and submit documentation showing that you meet the requirements for measles, rubella, varicella, mumps, hepatitis B, and tuberculosis by the designated form

Insurance

- Students are required to purchase international travel and health insurance before arriving in Japan. 
- In addition, all students are required to purchase accident (Course A of the ”Personal Accident Insurance (GAKKENSAI)”) and liability insurance (Course C of the “Liability Insurance Coupled with Gakkensai (Futaibaiseki)”). Science Tokyo offers both insurance policies for international students, and the enrollment process can be completed after arriving in Japan.
- Please note that Gakkensai insurance does not cover the firsr day of  your enrollment.
- The Course A of "Personal Accident Insurance (Gakkensai)" and the Course C of "Liability Insurance coupled with Gakkensai (Futaibaiseki)". The cost is approximately 2,000 JPY (1,150 JPY plus a commission fee).

Campus Information

Note

- Science Tokyo does not offer internships for international exchange / visiting students.
- Science Tokyo will not draft any documents and/or sign or seal any forms other than a Certificate of Acceptance and Evaluation Sheet.
- Students are not eligible to register for regular courses to receive academic credits.

Application Procedure and Required Documents

Once you decide to apply, please follow the steps below to complete your application.

Step 1: Entry Form Submission
Check the Application Schedule and submit the Entry Form during the designated acceptance period.
*Important: The Entry Form must be submitted ONLY by your home university's coordinator or administrative staff, not by the student applicant.
                       
Step 2: Application Form Submission
After the Entry Form is submitted, you will receive an Entry Number and a link to the Online Application Form. The student applicant can then complete and submit this Application Form, filling in all required information by the deadline.
The students can apply up to three departments. However, please be aware that there is a case that we may not be able to match you with your preferred departments. In such cases, we will be unable to accept you as an exchange or visiting student.
   
Step 3: Submission of Required Documents
The following are the main required documents. Please be aware that, depending on your case, additional documents may be requested, or some listed documents may not be required.
- CV/resume (any format)
- Personal statement (for Research student)
- Official transcript
- Copy of your passport
- Immunization record / antibody test result (specified format), along with relevant documentation (such as lab reports)
- Evaluation sheet (If necessary)
- VISA application documents (If necessary)
Please submit these documents during the entry period. However, the immunization record / antibody test result (specified format) must be submitted between six months and two months prior to the start of your placement.

Entry Form for International Exchange/Visiting Studernts

-The Entry Form must be completed by a university coordinator or student support personnel, not by the student themselves.
- Application documents are NOT available for download. Please note that Science Tokyo will not accept any requests or applications directly from students and
without approval from their home institution.
-Submissions received after the deadline cannot be accepted.
-If we do not receive any communication from the coordinator at least four months prior to the start of the desired exchange program, we will automatically cancel the application without prior notice and will not proceed with any further procedures.
