Project to Promote Dental Education and Research Bases in Southeast Asia

Project to Promote Dental Education and Research Bases in Southeast Asia

Project overview

For the international development of dental education and training—based on joint research with dental and life science education and research institutions in Southeast Asia, as well as achievements in human exchange and international student education—we are creating dental education and research bases in Southeast Asia and implementing projects such as aiming to standardize dental education. At the same time, we are constructing a medical care network in Southeast Asia via advanced joint research and bidirectional researcher and student exchange.

Objectives

Based on joint research with dental education and research institutions in Southeast Asia and achievements in human exchange and international student education, our aim is to promote research and educational exchange—centered on education and research bases in Southeast Asia—and standardize dental education with a view towards international developments.

Necessity and importance

In the European Union, educational programs for medical human resources are being standardized in member states as a response to mutual certification for medical professional job licenses.
In Southeast Asia as well urgent responses must be made towards globalization, such as the standardization of educational programs for license acquisition and mutual certification for medical professional job licenses. For instance, the possibility of conducting an English-language state examination in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region is being explored.

Overview of initiatives

The following four initiatives will be implemented in this project.
1Formulating guidelines for the standardization of dental education in Southeast Asia, etc.
2Proposing and conducting a Lifelong Training Course for dental practitioners and other persons in Southeast Asia
3Providing study-abroad information to prospective international students from Southeast Asia
4Providing health education and medical-care information to Japanese schools and Japanese expatriates in Southeast Asia

Expected effects

This project for the standardization of dental education in Southeast Asia will serve as a favorable opportunity to share with the world the high level of human resource development for dental professionals in Japan.
In addition, it is expected that the provision of medical care and health information to Japanese expatriates will provide peace of mind and safety to Japanese people living in other countries.
Moreover, we believe that it will contribute to the further development of education and research, starting with human resource development, in the field of dentistry in Japan.
