Report for IFDC Experience Course –June 2026–
A one-day hybrid course featuring the fields of Cariology and Operative Dentistry, and Periodontology took place successfully on June 15, 2026, both onsite at the CU-Science Tokyo Research and Education Collaboration Center at Chulalongkorn University and online via Zoom.
Participants enjoyed two presentations by speakers from Chulalongkorn University and two lectures by speakers from Science Tokyo who are specialits in the fields of Operative Dentistry and Periodontology.

Opening ceremony:
Prof. Manabu Kanazawa and Prof. Naoko Seki opened this course with an introduction to the CU-Science Tokyo Research and Education Collaboration Center and the International Faculty Development Course (IFDC).

Presentation:
“A case presentation in everyday operative dentistry: clinical decision making and restorative approach”

Case discussion facilitator:
Dr. Takashi Hatayama (Cariology and Operative Dentistry, Science Tokyo)
Participants learned about adhesive restorative approaches, including decision making, material selection, and clinical techniques, which might be applied to the management of their clinical cases.

Lecture by Dr. Hatayama, followed by a Q&A session
Participants learned about the potential applications of monoblock direct composite crowns, as well as concepts of minimal intervention and aesthetic dentistry. The lecture also highlighted evidence-based adhesive dentistry, often regarded as the gold standard in restorative treatment, supported by both scientific literature and Dr. Hatayama’s clinical experience.

“Periodontal-restorative relationship & interdisciplinary approaches”

Dr. Shogo Maekawa (Periodontology, Science Tokyo)
Participants learned about the sequencing of interdisciplinary treatment and strategies for achieving and maintaining periodontal health. This session emphasized the importance of periodontal stability as a foundation for successful restorative outcomes.
Lecture by Dr. Maekawa, followed by a Q&A session
Participants learned about the clinical implications of a periodontal disease diagnosis, treatment planning, and interdisciplinary periodontal-restorative treatment approaches. The lecture introduced the use of digital simulation in treatment planning, periodontal surgical techniques, as well as an introduction of his clinical cases with supporting scientific evidence.
Closing ceremony:
Professors Naoko Seki and Manabu Kanazawa concluded the course by thanking the participants and speakers for their contributions. It is hoped that this course will further strengthen academic collaboration and foster lasting professional relationships and friendships between the institutions.
