Report for Science Tokyo and UoM online CPD course 2025
An online Periodontal Lecture Series, which was hosted jointly by Science Tokyo and The University of Melbourne, took place successfully on the nights of the 9th and 23rd July 2025.
Participants listened to speakers from Science Tokyo and The Melbourne Dental School.
●Night 1: July 9, Wednesday
(19:30-21:25 AEST/18:30-20:25 JST)
Lecture 1:
"What should we know about biology of periodontium?: From basic science to clinical application" by Assistant Professor Mizuki Nagata
Participants were able to learn about the biology of the periodontium to treat periodontitis and the indications and limitations of periodontal regenerative therapies together with the prospects for periodontal regeneration.

"Genetics of periodontitis: problems and new approaches" by Dr. Neil McGregor
Participants were able to update their knowledge around the challenges associated with using current genetic analyses to assess periodontitis and its progression together with novel ways that were being introduced to approach these.

"Minimally invasive approach for periodontal tissue regeneration in patients with diabetes" by Junior Associate Professor Koji Mizutani
Participants could deepen their knowledge around advances in minimally invasive approaches to periodontal therapies, in particular, microsurgery and adjunctive laser applications using Erbium: YAG laser.

(19:30-22:00 AEST/18:30-21:00 JST)
Lecture 1:
"Soft tissue management for health and function of dental implant" by Assistant Professor Shogo Maekawa
Participants were able to learn the soft tissue phenotype around dental implants, importance of soft tissue management in achieving health and optimum functioning of dental implants and how to reduce the risk of peri-implant tissue complications.

"Ridge preservation: when, why and how" by Professor Stephen Chen
Participants were able to appreciate the treatment challenges arising from ridge resorption after a tooth extraction in relation to a future pontic site and implant placement. Whether or not to socket graft after an extraction, and the clinical steps required for socket grafting were also discussed.

"The power of digital flow in perio-implant treatments" by Adjunct Lecturer Kosei Yano
Participants were able to learn about periodontal approaches for achieving aesthetic balance, how digital technologies can enhance the precision and treatment efficiency in perio-implant treatments and how integrating both analogue and digital workflows can result in improved treatment planning, execution, and overall patient satisfaction.

"Challenges of digital dentistry and guided surgery" by Dr. Luan Ngo
Participants were able to gain an understanding in digital dentistry, in particular, static guided surgery and its accuracy, together with the advantages of undertaking flapless surgical procedures and the medicolegal implications of possible complications.
