Faculty of Medicine

Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1951 and now consists of the School of Medicine and the School of Health Care Sciences. In their coursework at the School of Medicine students study the mechanisms of the body and of disease, and in their project semester they learn how to consider evidence scientifically and summarize their conclusions. In the Research Training in Basic Medicine Course and the MD-PhD Course, in which students spend some time outside the Faculty of Medicine studying at the graduate school, education involves collaboration among specialties and fusing medical and dental science to teach a comprehensive approach to healthcare with specific emphases . The School of Health Care Sciences offers courses in Nursing Science and in Medical Technology. Coursework in the former includes Fundamental and Clinical Nursing and Community Health Nursing, and in the latter Laboratory Science and Laboratory Technology.
The School of Medicine and the School of Health Care Sciences welcome talented students who will become leaders in medical science and treatment not only in the future Japan but also in the future world. Furthermore, we seek students of lively imagination, with deep consideration for others and with strong spirit for contribution to people’ s welfare.
Based on the three fundamentals of educational philosophy of Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), all staff in the School of Medicine concentrate on training students to obtain academic and medical knowledge, high professional skills in clinical medicine, a researcher’s mind, a heart full of humanity, and excellent insights. We hope that many of our students will contribute to our and international societies .
The School of Medicine has been improving its educational curriculum in recent years, introducing a tutor system in problem-based medicine, the MD-PhD course, the TMDU-Imperial College (London) Student Exchange Program and other international exchange programs, the Harvard Medical School Externship program for 8-11 selected students every year, the project semester program for learning basic research for the 4th-year students, and clinical clerkship for the 5th- and 6th year students .

Because of the aging of society, medicine, health care, and welfare will be increasingly important in Japan. In line with TMDU's mission statement—“Cultivating professionals with knowledge and humanity”—the School of Medicine's curriculum is designed to train medical professionals with new learning and techniques and in a manner such that they procure a broad education and develop a rich sensitivity.
