Let’s build back better!

To All International Alumni of TMDU

It has been more than a year since the pandemic of the new coronavirus disease began. This situation has deepened my respect for you TMDU alumni. In each of your countries, you are at the forefront of infectious disease control, medical care, and research in life science/public health/medical science/dental science, and I feel confident that you are making the best use of the knowledge, technology, and networks you have obtained at TMDU. As you came to study at TMDU in Tokyo from various countries around the world, you had opportunities to learn about the world's diversity and think about the countries and regions where you can deliver your research outcomes.

Many of you graduates are active in universities, research institutions, hospitals, government agencies, local governments' offices, international organizations such as WHO, and business in your home countries or elsewhere. You are also making efforts to nurture young professionals. My conversations with TMDU faculty and alumni have shown me that we are all very proud of our work, and this is very rewarding to know. Along with the development of new technologies to manage emerging infectious diseases, digital transformation, and climate change, cross-disciplinary response and innovative ideas are important.

While promoting international joint research and international exchange programs, I feel a little regret nowadays that the opportunities to meet in person are limited. However, the convenient use of online tools has improved our communication dramatically. I hope that the wise use of these tools will help develop programs with fine-tuning in the near future, so Let's build back better!

I'm looking forward to revisiting your countries soon, and having the opportunity to work with you, the people of your countries, and learning from diversities.

To all international alumni of Tokyo Medical and Dental University
May 10, 2020

Congratulations to TMDU graduates all over the world, first of all, on your today's prosperity. More than 1600 international students have graduated from TMDU in the past 70 years, and now more than 320 international students, graduate students alone, are studying at TMDU with great motivations and hopes for their brilliant future. We are proud to have a long history of sharing our academic knowledge with young leaders all over the world and we ourselves have learned many things from all cultures of the countries where those students came from. Unfortunately, all of our staff are currently severely limited in their opportunities of travel and direct human-to-human interaction, that is why we should maintain a strong network between us, hopefully using new measures online, and enhance our friendships for good. Please get to know the current outlook of TMDU through this web site, and contact to the Institute of Global Affairs office or someone you've already known well at TMDU for future academic exchanges.
Each alumnus is a TMDU family member.
I pray for your health and happiness, and look forward to seeing you soon.

To the alumni of international students who studied in TMDU,

I hope you are fine and doing well. It has been just half a year since I completed the term of Director of Institute of Global Affairs, and the impact of COVID-19 is still hurting the entire world. The situation is not exceptional in TMDU. Under such circumstances, each and every member (including students) of TMDU is trying its best to perform education, research, study, and clinical activities. Personally in my department, the students including four international ones have come back to the laboratory for experiments, but most of the meetings such as research progress reports and journal clubs are remotely conducted by Zoom to prevent COVID-19.

Some of the new alumni may remember that I introduced to you some parts of the ancient books of Japan, Kojiki (records of ancient matters), Nihonshoki (chronicles of Japan), and Man-youshuu (collections of thousands of poems) which were compiled around 1,300 years ago. In those books, there are some descriptions suggesting pandemics. Mankind has always dealt with such difficulties with profound wisdom. In the current hard time, I hope that COVID-19 becomes manageable and that its negative impact on the whole hemispheres goes down to minimum soon.

Last but not least, I wish your health and happiness and hope that you can deliver the best performance in your respective positions.

O-genki desuka? (How is everyone doing?) As it now stands, COVID-related restrictions apply to the TMDU classes, clinical practice and research work that I know you all love, and I understand how difficult everything must be for you right now. I never expected to experience a global pandemic like this ahead of my retirement next March. Normal life will resume, however—of that I have no doubt—and in the meantime, our job is to focus on what we can still accomplish.

The current situation has sparked an increase in online classes via Zoom. I have been giving graduate school lectures in English in the classroom for many years, but this April my lectures were broadcast to students and professors in Turkey and the United States, and the sessions proved to be quite animated. Holding this month’s research project meeting on Zoom, meanwhile, made it possible to invite participants from overseas. I’m optimistic that these developments will enable a range of new activities that weren’t possible before.

For those who have studied abroad, you may have found it difficult to promote joint research with the classes you took overseas upon returning to Japan. However, I hope you will see this as an opportunity to experiment with new ideas and plans. At the very least, I hope the current situation will bring more people together for virtual reunions. We are currently putting together a program open to foreign students for the Japanese Stomatological Society this December. We can only pray that the current situation will improve, as we are hoping to attract large numbers to this event.
(⇒★Update information: International Symposiium 2020 finished successfully. For details, please click here.)

I have some very exciting news to share with you, too. In May 2020, amidst ongoing calls for social distancing, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approved the dental diagnosis method using OCT (optical coherence tomography) imaging that we have been working on for the past decade. Developed in our classroom laboratory, this is the world’s first dental diagnostic OCT device, an incredible achievement made possible through everyone’s hard work. The device remains expensive, but everyone involved in the research and development is aware of its great significance for both clinical and research applications. We will continue to promote its usefulness here in the classroom.

I look forward to working with you all on joint projects again soon. Let’s stay positive and keep moving forward!
