About NIH and NCI

From June 30th 2008 to August 4th in 2008, I had studied abroad under Dr. Victor E. Marquez, Chief of Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry, NCI, NIH, Frederick, MD, USA (Jul. 25, 2008), and Dr. Peter M. Blumberg, Chief of Molecular Mechanisms of Tumor Promotion Section, Laboratory of Cancer Biology and Genetics, Center for Cancer Research, NCI, NIH, Bethesda, USA (Jun. 31, 2008). The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. The National Cancer Institute (NCI), a part of NIH contents, is one of the biggest research center of cancer all over the world.

Dr. Marquez’s lab and Dr. Blumberg’s lab

Dr. Marquez, who is a collaborator of Dr. Tamamura, introduced me to Dr. Blumberg.
Dr. Blumberg’s lab members are from various counties. Since Dr. Blumberg is willing to accept handicapped people, the lab meeting has been held with a sign language interpreter. His research there is elucidation of “Mechanism of Action of Phorbol Esters and Related Derivatives”. I have learned a method for evaluating the binding affinity of a ligand and its receptor using a radio isotope.

One day during my US stay, I have visited Dr. Marquez at Frederick. He researches about “Rational Design of Antitumor and Antiviral Agents”. In Frederick, I have also visited Dr. Terrence R Burke, Jr., Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry. Everyone talked to me so kindly about their study and Frederick life.

Finally

The NIH life gave me a great experience. Without kind support from everyone, the training have not been carried out safely. I would like to specially thank you them.

I would like to greatly appreciate “Jinzai katsuyo committee” support.
