Message from the Dean, Faculty of Dentistry
Keiji Moriyama, DDS, PhD
The Tokyo Medical and Dental University Faculty of
Dentistry was established in 1928 as the fi rst governmentbased
dental school in Japan. The Faculty of Dentistry currently
consists of two schools - the School of Dentistry and
the School of Oral Health Care Sciences - the latter being
composed of the Course for Oral Health Care Sciences and
the Course for Oral Health Engineering. As a whole, the
faculty fosters oral health care providers, such as dentists,
dental hygienists and dental technicians, who provide holistic
care to patients, using excellent skills and having a fi rm
sense of mission based on a deep understanding of systemic
diseases as well as normal and pathologic conditions
of oral cavity. We also encourage future dental researchers
to explore new knowledge and technologies necessary for
the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases
and related systemic conditions. Through the university’s
international and interprofessional programs of education
students acquire a sense of professional collaboration demanded
in a highly globalized and aging society. Nothing is
more critical to securing the Faculty of Dentistry’s position
as the top-ranked dental school not only in Japan but also in
the world than fostering global leaders who are capable of
integrating traditional approaches with modern cuttingedge
method in dental care, education, and research.
