History and Features of the Department

Our department started clinical service on October 1, 1978, and was formally established as an academic chair on April 1, 1979. In 1980, Professor Hiroshi Tsukagoshi joined as the founding chair, marking the beginning of the department's history. In April 1999, during the graduate-school reorganization, the former Department of Neurology was reorganized into the Department of Neurological Science within the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, and it later evolved into the present Department of Neurology and Neurological Science.

What began as a four-bed service has developed into one of the largest neurology wards among national universities in Japan, with 34 beds. Including affiliated institutions, our alumni are active in a wide range of roles, including department chiefs and attending physicians at core hospitals, professors at public universities, leaders of national research institutes, directors of rehabilitation centers, founders of clinics, public officials, and executives in healthcare-related industries.

As society ages rapidly, the need for highly trained neurologists continues to grow. In collaboration with the university hospital's postgraduate clinical education system, our department has built its own clinical training program and remains committed to fostering the next generation of excellent neurologists.

In recent years, new therapies and molecularly targeted treatments have emerged for neurological diseases that were once difficult to treat. We sincerely welcome motivated young physicians and researchers who wish to help shape the next era of neurology with us.
