President Address:

I consider it is a great privilege and honor to speak here on this commemorative occasion
First and foremost, my hearty congratulations to Advanced I Super Students and PI Chaperone investigators to be enrolled into our Global Center of Excellence Program, that is the International Research Center for Molecular Science in Tooth and Bone Diseases.

Japanese government considers that it is necessary for Japanese universities to promote education and research programs to the same level as that of the top universities around the world and then started the 21st Century COE Program in 2002.
And furthermore, this year, our government has inaugurated “Global COE Program” based on the re-evaluation by the third party on the 21st Century COE Programs and new candidates, from the point of whether it is designed to create centers of education and research excellence to meet the world’s highest order. Finally, Global COE program has been awarded to 14 universities out of 72 candidates in medical field and Tokyo Medical and Dental University has been awarded at the top of them.
Concerning the contributions to the society in the past, our university has developed major types of treatment for the patients suffering from hard tissue diseases. These establishments have been already accepted as a routine practice in dental and medical clinic, such as the direct bonding system by Miura, the total etching by Fusayama, the electrical root canal length measurement by Sunada and the limb salvage surgery for musculoskeletal sarcoma treatment by Kawaguchi which were developed in our university. Our Global COE program, the International Research Center for Molecular Science in Tooth and Bone Diseases, should further promote the science in the field of hard tissues and also has to continue such a splendid history of their achievements

During the previous COE program, professors in our university have successfully developed Chaperone and Super Student system. This is a unique system to raise young and talented researchers and selected top graduate students. Furthermore, professors appointed in the new G-COE are required to raise them to be at the top level in the world.
Japan is now regarded as a top class country in the world with respect to the health issues. However, we are still facing more problems due to the high levels of health maintenance and longevity of life. Tooth and bone health is one of the most critical aspects to maintain healthy life. The Global Center of Excellence Program proposed by our university, that is to say, International Research Center for Molecular Science in Tooth and Bone Diseases is seriously responsible for the major global health issue.

In closing, I would like to thank the professors appointed in this program for making every endeavor to conduct in advance.
