(1) International PI-Chaperone (PIC) System

International PI-Chaperone (PIC) system is a new Chaperone system (to study with and guide graduate students) to develop young researchers (1) who are selected based on competitive international open recruitment and (2) who aim to be global Principal Investigators. In addition to Principal Investigators this system includes development of further challenging academic area (Prime Innovation), and creates future areas and advance of internationally competitive and creative projects (Project with Imagination). That is our International Chaperon System with 3 PI Keywords. The PI-Chaperon should be recruited from outside of our university by interviews in English. The candidates should have already finished postdoctoral fellowship (we do not hire postdocs). It is not enough for young researchers to pursue innovation and work independently, even if they are simply provided with lab space, financial resources and staffs. What they really need is an "Environment with Appropriate Guidance" as a suitable place for cultivation. This has to be lead by mentors. Therefore, the following are to be set up: (1) multi-advisory system including and beyond the specific research area of the young investigator, (2) international advisory system, (3) grant writing training with domestic and international views by being instructed by experts including grant referees who have experience in granting system of Japan and/or National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA), (4) individual instruction for distinguished selected students (AI-SS), (5) financial support for international research activities such as participation in meetings, (6) promotion system (PIC-Junior to PIC-Senior) and incentive based on appropriate evaluation, and (7) support environment for multi disciplinary research core. The International PI Chaperone system at the G-COE center is to cultivate young researchers leading world highest standard education and research by setting up above environments.

(2) Advanced I Super Student (AI-SS) System

The Advanced I Super Students are selected based on competition from about top 20% students in the graduate school and receive intensive graduate education and financial support to gain ability to work globally. Our 21st century COE project created the Super Student (SS) system for focused development resulting in the successful outcomes. This G-COE center will further develop this system to create a new form aiming to cultivate human resources with 3 “I” keywords, (i) International, (ii) Interactive and (iii) Individual identity.
In the AI-SS system, we will newly create education which can be selected by the super students themselves. These include (1) International mentor system as international education, (2) Exchange with graduate students at overseas top level centers and training the students by overseas instructors based on international "Interactive" program to participate in graduate student "Research Day" at Harvard University (US), University of Toronto (Canada) and USCF [not only presenting their data, but also experiencing interaction between faculties and young researchers at overseas excellent centers (how to teach, how to learn, asking questions, presentation and debate) ], and (3) an international (Intl.) educational program pathways to develop individuality. ?These include, ICP (lntl. Continuator Prog.), ITR (Intl. Traing.), GRS (Gradient stud.), IIP (Intl. Interactive Prog.), ISP (Intl. Scholarship Prog.), ITS (Intl. Internship). We will also continue our successful educational system achieved in the current 21 COE. This includes, (1) multi-advisory system, (2) individual interviews by distinguish overseas researchers, (3) training for grant writing, (4) education of English debate and presentation by native speakers, (5) participation in research debate by more than three COE professors in charge of project promotion in advanced tooth and bone science (comprehensive presentation), (6) individual instruction by PIC and (7) interactive students’ voluntary meetings in English by AISSs (AISS Forum).
