2026 Guidelines for Collaboration with Research Center for Biomedical Engineering

PDF version

The Research Center for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE) was established through a collaboration between four prominent research institutes: the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Institute of Science Tokyo; the Laboratory for Future Interdisciplinary Research of Science and Technology, Institute of Science Tokyo; the Research Institute for Semiconductor Engineering, Hiroshima University; and the Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University. The RCBE aims to integrate their unique strengths and technologies. We invite applications for joint research with the RCBE in the following areas.

1. Research areas for application

  1. Basic and applied research on biomaterials
  2. Basic and applied research on bioengineering
  3. Basic and applied research on bio-functional molecule
  4. Applied research in chemistry, electricity, machinery, and materials engineering for above fields

Table 1. Types of application

Types Definition of type Maximum budget Number of adoption
(only as a guide)
Global A · Including institute(s) located in outside Japan
· Number of all institutes is 3 or more
600,000 yen About 20 themes
Global B · Including institute located in outside Japan
· Number of all institutes is 2
300,000 yen About 20 themes
Domestic A · NOT including institute located in outside Japan
· Number of all institutes is 3 or more
200,000 yen Determined by application status
Domestic B · NOT including institute located in outside Japan
· Number of all institutes is 2
150,000 yen Determined by application status

2. Qualified applicant

  1. As of April 1, 2026, researcher at universities, research institutes, companies, or equivalents.
  2. Researcher(s) belonging to RCBE must be included in your research team. Please specify the name of the researcher(s) in the “Applicant Organization” of 2026 Application Form.
  3. In principal, only one application is accepted per research representative. If one research presentative applies for two or more projects, clearly indicate differences in research theme, organization, etc., in the application form.

3. Research period

From April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027

4. Application process

  1. Discuss themes, members, and other matters with RCBE researchers before application.
  2. Refer to the RCBE homepage (https://www.tmd.ac.jp/ibbc/index_e.html) for information on staffs, facilities, research outline, etc.
  3. Send 2026 application form (both Word and pdf) to the respective RCBE secretariat.

5. Required budget

  1. Support will be provided within the maximum budget of each type.
  2. Budgets are determined by each RCBE Laboratory.
  3. Use of expenses is limited to those related to the proposed joint research.

6. Deadline for submissions

January 30, 2026 (Friday) (Strict deadline)

7. Selection and acceptance / rejection notification

Adoptions are judged by RCBE steering committee. The result will be notified after April 2026.

8. Submission of implementation report

Accepted applicants should submit a joint research implementation report after completing research. Details about the report format and submission deadline will be provided separately.

9. Other considerations

    (1) If the number of participating institutions decreases during the research period due to personnel transfers or other reasons, please notify the administrative office of the coordinating Secretariat of RCBE without delay. The continuation of the project will be reviewed at the Board of Directors Meeting.
    (2) If the project continues under the situation described in (1), the allocation of research funds will in principle remain unchanged.
    (3) For research involving animal experiments, human samples, human gene analysis, gene recombination experiments, etc., bioethics and safety measurements may be required.
    (4) Intellectual property rights will follow the standards of each research institute.
    (5) Contact the secretariat for details on using RCBE facilities/equipment.
    (6) When presenting RCBE results, acknowledge support with: “This study was supported by the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering.”
