The 8th International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering was jointly held with the International Workshop on Nano Device Technology

As part of the activities of the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE), the 8th International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering (ISBE) was held on November 21 (Tuesday) and 22 (Wednesday), 2023. Hiroshima University served as the host institution for this year, and it was jointly organized with the International Workshop on Nano Device Technology (IWNT), which has been hosted by Hiroshima University in the past.

The event began with an opening address by President Mitsuo Ochi of Hiroshima University, followed by greetings from Mr. Koji Yanagisawa, Director of the University Research Facilitation Division, Research Promotion Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (read by Ms. Kumiko Kakisawa, Academic Research Coordinator). Professor Hiroyuki Kagechika, Director of the Institute of Biomedical Materials at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, provided an introduction to the RCBE. Over the two days, the symposium featured 12 invited lectures for ISBE (including 4 international researchers), 4 invited lectures for IWNT (including 2 international researchers), and 121 poster presentations.

The participants numbered 194, including 7 international researchers, engaging in lively discussions across diverse fields such as biomaterials, biosensors, therapeutic methods, diagnostic devices, drug delivery systems, functional molecules, bio-MEMS, robotics, biomedical devices/systems, physiological measurements, simulation and characterization, biomarkers, and nano/micro-devices. During the poster presentation session, 7 poster awards were selected from the 64 eligible for the award.

The 6th symposium in the fiscal year 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, and the 7th symposium in the previous fiscal year was held online. However, this year marked a return to on-site hosting after three years, with almost all presentations delivered in person except for some from overseas. Enthusiastic discussions took place between presenters and attentive attendees. Additionally, the poster session was conducted in person, allowing for close communication after a long hiatus. Through these interactions, collaborative research centered around this facility was promoted, making the symposium highly beneficial.
