Interdisciplinary Training on Medical AI Held at the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Institute of Science Tokyo

As part of the activities of RCBE (Research Center for Biomedical Engineering), an annual hands-on training program on medical AI is held to foster young researchers in interdisciplinary fields. This year’s program, “Implementation of Medical Artificial Intelligence and Medical Data Analysis” (AI DOJO 2026), took place from September 7 to 10, 2026, hosted by the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Institute of Integrated Research, Institute of Science Tokyo. The program was primarily conducted online, with some participants attending in person at the laboratory during the final two days.

A total of eight students participated: two from Tohoku University, four from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, and two from Institute of Science Tokyo. The program aimed to help participants understand the fundamentals of AI for medical data processing and acquire practical implementation skills, while encouraging exchanges among young researchers from different disciplines and broadening their research perspectives.

The curriculum progressed from the principles of AI and neural networks (NNs) to implementation in Python, data preparation and preprocessing, training and prediction using medical data, and model evaluation. Topics included building perceptrons and NNs with NumPy, machine learning workflows with scikit-learn, the fundamentals of deep learning with TensorFlow and PyTorch, and convolutional neural networks for image analysis. Practical applications and recent developments in medical AI were also included. Through the creation of training data with medical imaging software and the improvement, testing, and evaluation of models, the program aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of medical AI design and application.

This training program takes advantage of the unique facilities and research environments across the four participating institutes. RCBE will continue its efforts to nurture the next generation of researchers who will lead the advancement of biomedical engineering.
