The Research Center for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE) successfully organized an impactful practical training workshop focused on AI in healthcare, hosted at Tokyo Medical and Dental University

As a crucial component of RCBE's endeavors, this workshop was strategically designed to stimulate interdisciplinary growth among emerging scholars. The event unfolded from August 21st (Monday) to 24th (Thursday) at Tokyo Medical and Dental University's Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Notably, RCBE took care of travel and lodging expenses, ensuring an inclusive atmosphere conducive to student participation. Noteworthy is the hybrid format adopted this year, which seamlessly blended online and on-site engagement.

The workshop attracted a diverse cohort of seven participants hailing from distinguished institutions including Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, the University of Tokyo, and Nagoya University. Attendees delved into an immersive curriculum encompassing AI fundamentals, techniques for data preparation and preprocessing, AI implementation, strategies for optimizing AI performance, and the latest trends in medical AI. Practical sessions were a hallmark, wherein participants skillfully employed neural networks (NN) – a subset of AI – to execute tasks such as image classification, object detection, and image segmentation for in-depth medical image data analysis. These exercises leveraged the power of NN through learning and predictive algorithms. Rigorous performance evaluations of the neural networks rounded off the training, encapsulating a comprehensive grasp from foundational principles to swift evaluation using real-world medical image datasets.

At the core of RCBE's philosophy lies the commitment to multidisciplinary development. The center artfully harnesses the distinctive resources and research environments from four separate research institutes, leading to the emergence of cross-disciplinary training initiatives. As we march ahead, RCBE's unwavering dedication endures – we are resolutely invested in nurturing the next generation of trailblazers in the dynamic field of biomedical engineering.
