Held a training seminar on AI medical care at Tokyo Medical and Dental University

As part of the RCBE (Research Center for Biomedical Engineering) activities, we have started training seminar on AI medical care for fostering young researchers in interdisciplinary fields. This year, from August 22nd (Monday) to 25th (Thursday), we had practical training at the Institute of Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Travel and accommodation expenses are covered by RCBE for reducing the cost of attending students. Furthermore, the seminar was made by on-line considering COVID-19.

Five researchers participated the seminar (4-researchers and one graduate student) from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Hiroshima University, RIKEN, and Tokyo Metropolitan University. A program of this seminar is learning about the operating principle of AI, how to create and preprocess the required data, how to implement AI, tips for improving AI performance, the latest trends in medical AI, and practical training on neural networks (NN), a type of AI. In the seminar, they experienced an implementation of NN, image classification using NN, data analysis of medical images such as object detection and image segmentation. Finally, performance evaluation of NN were performed.

We believe that it was a valuable experience for them to understand the principles of medical AI using NN using even in a short period of time. We will continue to give the opportunities of interdisciplinary experiences for young researchers, and pioneer a new field of medical engineering.
