Research Support Personnel Assignment Model Activities

Research Support Personnel Assignment Model Activities

Introduction

Tokyo Medical and Dental University was commissioned to carry out the "support model activities for female researchers" using the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology provided by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in FY2008, and the Support Office for Female Researchers intends to develop a variety of model activities before the end of March 2011.

One aspect of our mission statement activities is to provide research support personnel for female researchers who are having difficulty continuing with their career due to childbirth or nursing, or because of an ailment specific to women. In FY2008, we carried out these activities for the university’s research institutes. In FY2009, we plan to widen the range of these activities across the entire campus.

We are currently investigating the type of impact assigning research support personnel has on female researchers themselves as well as the research institutes they work for, and are looking into the kind of future support necessary for both female and male researchers with child rearing or care-giving responsibilities. The support personnel assigned may be either male or female, and those hired are considered part-time employees for the Support Office for Female Researchers.

  • Assistance for research being conducted by applicable female researchers (including clinical research)
    OR
  • Assistance for research being conducted by applicable female researchers in collaboration with another member of the same institute (including clinical research)

Outline of Research Support Personnel Assignment Activities

  1. Female researchers who wish research support personnel to be assigned must fill out an application outlining the expected results of the assignment as well as a description of their research proposal and submit an original that has been approved and stamped by their department head to the Support Office for Female Researchers.
  2. A final decision on applicable applicants will be made by the Selection Committee.
  3. The researcher must place their own application for research support personnel selection. (Note: Applications cannot be placed through the Support Office for Female Researchers.) 4. The appointment of research support personnel is conditional to consent from the researcher’s department head.
  5. The Support Office for Female Researchers carries out appointment-related procedures, and research support personnel work for the Support Office for Female Researchers.
  6. Each research institute must keep a record of research support personnel work hours.
  7. Once every month the work conditions of research support personnel must be reported to the Support Office for Female Researchers.
  8. Reports shall be submitted and meetings held regarding the results of the assigned research support personnel (approx. twice every year).
