PhD Position available

One PhD position is available in the “Immune Regulation” group at the Deutsches Rheuma-Forschungszentrum (DRFZ, Berlin, Germany). This position could start immediately, and is for duration of 3-4 years. Salary would be 1000 euro net /month.

Our group is investigating the role of B lymphocytes in immunity. These cells contribute to immune responses by secreting antibodies, presenting antigen to T cells, and secreting cytokines such as interleukin-6 and interleukin-10.

Production of antigen specific IgM is a hallmark of the immune response and occurs within the first days of an infection or after immunisation with an antigen. Rapidly produced IgM is thought to play a crucial role in the early control of infectious agents, when the adaptive immune response is not yet fully developed. However, the signals leading to IgM production are poorly defined. We have recently shown that b1-integrins were required for the production of IgM but not IgG (Immunity. 2002 Mar;16(3):465-77 ), this being the first description of a mouse strain selectively unable to secrete IgM during immune responses. Our aim is to define the role of b1-integrins for IgM production and to use this tool to identify signals selectively required for the differentiation of antigen specific B cells along the IgM production pathway.

This project will use modern techniques of cellular immunology.

The applicant should be highly motivated, and possess a good knowledge of English.
