Center of Excellent （COE） program has been initiated by the Japanese government to further promote the development of strong research centers in Japan to be and to stay at the top of the world.
Our COE program entitled, “Frontier Research on Molecular Destruction and Reconstruction of Tooth and Bone ”
,has been selected as one of the two COE programs proposed by Tokyo Medical and Dental University.It is quite an epoch to be selected as the only program in Japan specifically targeted at hard tissue diseases.Our university has been established as the
first dental school in Japan and has been also selected as one of the few graduate school universities several years ago by the Japanese government.The recognition of our continuingly
high research activity has been further strengthened by the decision of 21 st century COE program committee and the ministry of education, culture and sports this time.
The research team acting in the field of tooth and bone diseases in our university has been regarded as one of the world top class groups in this area of medical science.As a matter of fact,
our university has developed major types of treatments for the patients suffering from hard tissue diseases and these treatments have been already accepted as a common sense in dental
and medical practice now.To name a few, direct bonding system initiated by Miura, total etching by Fusayama, and electrical root canal length measurement by Sunada, limb salvage surgery for
musculoskeltal sarcoma surgery by Kawaguchi, and anterior decompression surgery for cervical myelopathy due to ossified posterior longitudinal ligament （OPLL）by Yamaura, are the
examples of such world‐ leading establishments developed in our university.The 21 st century program for the Frontier Research on Molecular Destruction and Reconstruction of Tooth and Bone will
further promote our science and let us continue such splendid establishments by the researchers in our university.
As the president of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, I will urge this program research project to explore novel ways to cure the patients suffering from intractable diseases whose
treatments have not yet been established even in this modern world.The program will lead the science in molecular medicine via generation of new ideas and novel thoughts through
international interactions among the investigators in the field Most importantly, the faculty members in our tooth and bone research program will raise excellent young scientists in this
field , whose research will benefit Japanese nation as well as the people in the whole world in the future.
