Conditions for Completion and Method for Taking Courses

Master's course

1. Conditions for completion

A student must attend this PhD Program for at least two years, acquire at least 30 units, and pass the master's thesis exam (open to the public) and the final examination.

2. How to take courses

The method to obtain 30 units on this PhD Program is as follows:

1) A student must obtain ten units in compulsory subjects in his/her special field of study and select, obtain up to 10 units in general electives and at least 10 units from the elective subjects open in each special field of study. In addition, the student must acquire at least 10 units by taking special seminars.

2) To add a subject for study, a registration application must be accepted at the beginning of each school year.

3) In selecting subjects, a student must carefully read the syllabus and complete the procedures to sign up for a course after consulting with a guidance counselor or advisory teacher if necessary.

4) A responsible guidance counselor (mainly in charge of research guidance), a guidance counselor (assistant research guidance counselor) and the theme of research will be determined in July in response to the student’s wishes and upon deliberation of the council of professors in the PhD Program. The main guidance counselor will be a professor in charge of the Biomedical Science PhD Program, and the assistant research guidance counselor will be a professor, assistant professor, lecturer or a teacher concurrently serving in a different faculty or department at the Biomedical Science PhD Program. If the student pursues research in a subject at an affiliated institute, one teacher of this school should be included in the guidance staff.

4. Lecture room and practice room

Intensive lectures: The lecture room of the Biomedical Science PhD Program (the 3rd Building, 9F)
Lectures as needed: A location decided by the teacher in charge
Practice room: The practice room of the Biomedical Science PhD Program

Students should be careful not to leave their private belongings in the lecture room and the practice room. When a student wishes to use the lecture or practice room outside the designated hours, he/she must obtain prior permission.

Doctor's course

1. Conditions for completion

A student must attend this department for at least three years, acquire at least 20 units, and pass the doctor's thesis exam (open to the public) and the final examination.

2. How to take courses

The method to obtain 20 units at this department is as follows:

1) A student must obtain ten units in compulsory subjects in his/her special field of study and select and obtain four units from electives and at least six units from the general elective list and attend those classes.
2) To add a subject for study, a registration application must be accepted at the beginning of each school year.

3) In selecting subjects, a student must carefully read the syllabus and complete the procedures to sign up for a course after consulting with a guidance counselor or advisory teacher if necessary.

4) A responsible guidance counselor (mainly in charge of research guidance), a guidance counselor (assistant research guidance counselor) for the research project will be determined in July in response to the student’s wishes and upon deliberation of the council of professors in this department. The plan for the research project will be devised by the student and will occasionally receive guidance from the guidance committee. The main guidance counselor will be a professor in charge of the Biomedical Science PhD Program and the assistant guidance counselor will be a professor, assistant professor, lecturer or a teacher concurrently serving in a different faculty or department at the Biomedical Science PhD Program. If the student pursues a research project in the subject at an allied institute, one teacher of this Graduate School should be included in the guidance staff.

3. Lectures hours
Lectures hours for the general electives are the same as those on the Master's course.

4. Lecture room
The lecture room will be decided by the teacher in charge.
