The role of dentists today is not just to provide dental treatment needed by the patient but also to protect the patient, staff and himself from cross-infection. Therefore, in the dental school, infection control procedures are rather strict and policies are made to ensure that students understand and practice them accordingly.
In Singapore, we are fortunate to have a low number of patients who are HIV positive, being slightly more than 500 in number. However, we have also to be concerned about hepatitis where the organisms are more virulent, being able to survive for longer periods.
My presentation will cover our methods of implementing and practicing infection control procedures and also the system we have used to deal with some of the injuries faced during the provision of treatment to the patient.
