Sick Child Care

Medical & Academic (M&A) Package Development Activities for Dispatch-style Sick Child Care

Introduction

Child rearing is a major topic affecting the careers of female researchers and medical staff, and while not just a problem for women, the present circumstances are such that women are more easily affected. In the mission statement released by Tokyo Medical and Dental University, it states that a support system for use during emergencies or when children are sick will be implemented under the heading "support model activities for female researchers" using the Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology received in FY2008.

In FY2009, Tokyo Medical and Dental University signed a corporate contract with the NPO Florence in order to develop medical and academic (M&A) packages for dispatch-style care for sick children in collaboration with our university.

We recognize that researchers and medical staff may have different needs to regular full-time workers, and that medical staff and medical facilities may have to deal with the issue of sick child care in their role as medical care provider. Child care services take a variety of forms including facility-style and dispatch-style services, and it is necessary to develop services for implementation while exploring the various pros and cons. It is of great importance that these model activities for sick child care contribute to a new service with the participants acting as monitors.

NPO Florence

In April 2004, Florence was awarded NPO status. The company provides a variety of services centered on sick child care, and is the first NPO is Japan to adopt a serious stance towards dispatch-style sick child care.

Children must be registered beforehand, and in the event that they suddenly develop symptoms such as a fever and the parent contacts the company before 8 am on the day that they require care, an emergency child carer will be sent out to the residence. After the child has been seen by a personal physician, the carer looks after the child at either the child’s residence or carer’s residence, or at a sick child care facility.
