a) 多くの名詞は単数に 's' をつけて複数を作る。
b) 's' 音 (s, z, ch, sh, x) 終わる名詞は、発音の便宜上 "es" をつける。
"es" は、独立の音節として発音する。 例:
one church, two churches; one box, tow boxes.
c) 少数の名詞は、特別の複数形を持つ。
men(man), feet(foot) women(women)、teeth(tooth)、 chil-
dren(child)、 mice (mouse).
d) 子音+"y" でおわる時は、"y" を "i" にかえ、"es" をつけ、複数を作る。
city, cities; lady, ladies
e) 母音+"y" でおわるとき、単に "s" とつける。

f) "f"/"fe" でおわる時、"f" を "v" に変え、"s"/"es" をつける。

不可算名詞: 固有名詞
(1) 人、国、街路、市、町の名前を、単独で固有名詞として使う時には、冠詞
はつかない。例:
I live in New York City on the corner of Broadway and 76th St.
I heard that Mr. Smith was going to Russia, England, and France.
(2) しかし、これらの固有名詞が 他の名詞を修飾する形容詞として使う時は、
冠詞をつける。例:
Mexico has a warm climate. Chicago is a large city.
The Mexican climate is warm. The Chicago fire was a large one.
(3) さらに、固有名詞が、大きく纏まった河、海、山脈、国等の構成員(物)
として、それらを特定する機能をもつ時、 定冠詞がつく。

可算(普通)名詞の 冠詞
(1) 不定冠詞と定冠詞の基本的な違いを理解せよ。 例:
A book is on the table.
The book which I am reading is very interesting.
(2) 第一の文では不定冠詞が book の前に使われている。それは特定の本を指
していないから。それは一般的な本である。 それは大きい本かもしれないし、
歴史の本かもしれない。そのようなことを特定していない。それは、単に一般
的な本である。
(3) 第二の文では、特定の本を指定している。それは決まった本である。 すな
わち現に私が今読んでいる本である。それで、我々は、その前に定冠詞を付け、
他の全ての本から(from all other books)区別する。
可算(普通)名詞複数の冠詞
(1) 定冠詞は、単数名詞と同様に複数名詞も修飾。例:
The book which is on the table belongs to me.
The books which are on the table belong to to me.
(2) 不定冠詞 "a" (or "an") は複数では用いない。複数名詞を一般的に使うと
き、冠詞は使わない。例:
There is a book on the table. (No particular book).
There are books on the table. (No particular books).
There many books and sevenral magazing on the table.
可算名詞の冠詞:語感3態
(1) A tiger is a dangerous animal.
1頭の虎が(世界のすべての虎を代表して)恐ろしい目をしてジャングルか
ら現れて来る。”a tiger”は、世界に数多くいる虎(複数)の中の1頭という
意味。不定冠詞だから、どの一頭か特定しない。1応、代表となる一頭である。
(2)The tiger is a dangerous animal.
動物図鑑を繰っていくと、トラの挿絵があって、その下の説明にぴったり。
定冠詞で一般を表す表現は、改まった感じ、書き言葉的。講義や説教に頻繁に
使われる。日常会話には、少々硬い。
(3) Tigers are dangerous animal.s
何頭かの虎が恐ろしい目をしてジャングルから現れてくる。複数形はどうし
ても複数のものを連想。複数で想像するせいか、a tigerより、危険性をいく
らかリアルに感じる。原則として、複数形で一般を表す表現は、最も日常会話
的。よほど日常的なフィーリングを持った表現。
不可算(物質、抽象)名詞の冠詞
(1) 名詞がある不特定の量または質を示すとき、冠詞は使わない。例:
Gold is an important metal.
Honesty is always the best policy.
(2) 特定の量または質を示すとき、冠詞 "the" が先行する。例:
The gold in this ring is very old.
The honesty of Mr.Smith is above question.
不可算/可算名詞の冠詞3態
(1) rain in Spain: もっとも一般的な表現
Rain tends to fall only very lightly in south central Spain.

名詞の修飾:形容詞の限定用法
形容詞は主として名詞を修飾する。
大部分が �0er, -est, またはmore, mostをつけて比較級・最上級をつくる。
限定用法 (attributive use) と 述語用法 (predicative use) とがある。
a beautiful princess in a fine old castle.
He was the most eloquent orator in the country.
Tokyo is larger than New York.
名詞の修飾:人称代名詞
人称代名詞はつぎの通り。形容詞として所有を示す。

(0) 所有格は「所有感」が強い:

(1) 名詞の所有格は、単数形に 's をつけて作る。例:
John's book, the man's car
(2) 名詞が複数で s で終わるときは、apostrophe のみをつける。例:
The boys' hats the dogs' tails
(3) 所有格は、人および動物にのみ使う: 普通生きていないものには使わない。
それで:
"the house's roof" とせず、"the roof of the house." とする。
"the table's top" とせず、"the top of the table." とする。
(4) 更に、日常会話では、所有格で修飾される名詞が、容易に了解可能のとき、
省略する。例:
I must go to the dentist's (office).
She likes to shop in Woolworth's (store).

Preposition(前置詞)
名詞または名詞類の前に置いて形容詞句・副詞句をつくる語。
形容詞句: Man is superior to animals in that he can speak.
副詞句: He was given up for dead.(彼は死んだものとあきらめられた)
How far is it from here to Chicago?
前置詞の次に置かれる語を目的語と呼ぶ。目的語は普通は名詞または代名詞.
疑問詞で始まる疑問文では、前置詞が疑問詞と密接に結び付いているときには、
Under what circumstances did he succeed?
By what means are you going to obtain it?
のように分離しない。普通は前置詞が文の終わりに来る:
What is he crying for?(なぜ彼は泣いているのですか)
Where did you come from? (あなたはどこから来ましたか)。
二重前置詞 Double preposition
2この前置詞が並んで、一つの前置詞の役目をするもの。
I stayed till after dark.(私は日暮れて後まで残った。)
He took it out from under the desk.(彼はそれを机の下から取り出した。)
A voice was heard from among them.(彼らの中から、声が聞こえて来た。)
Up to that point, everything was all right.(そこのところまでは、
万事うまく行った)
He has been living here since before the war.(彼は戦争前から、
ずっとここに住んでいる。)
[注]till after dark の場合, till after を二重前置詞と見ないで, till が
after dark という前置詞句を目的とする単純前置詞である、と説く学者もある。
関係代名詞 relative pronoun
代名詞の一種で、代名詞と接続詞の働きを兼ねる語。
who, which, that, what, as, but が主な関係代名詞。例えば、
Do you know the man who came here yesterday?
という文では、who は、the man を受けた代名詞として、後半の部分(came
here yesterday)の主語となっている。しかも、 the man につながり、その意
味を限定している。
「関係代名詞に導かれる形容詞節」によって限定される語をその先行詞という。
先行詞が、who では人、
which では事物や動物、
that では人または事物・動物。
what はそれ自身に先行詞を含んだ関係代名詞。
関係代名詞: 2用法
制限用法restrictive use
関係代名詞や関係副詞が導く節(関係詞節relative clause)が先行詞を直接
限定する。
This is the dog which bit me.
Where is the book that you bought yesterday?
Do you know the exact time when the accident occurred?
This is the house where the poet was brought up.
関係代名詞:2用法(続き)
非制限用法 nonrestrictive use
関係詞節が,先行詞を間接的に受けて追加的に説明。(略式語)ではあまり用いない。
通常関係詞の前にコンマが置かれる。読むときは休止と上昇調イントネーション。
●挿入句用法:
The man, who took off his hat when he saw me, said nothing, but his
wife began to speak to me.
The letter, which I had received from her previous day, contained
nothing important.
●継続用法(continuative use):and, but のような�"接+人称代名�#に直せる。
I couldn't solve the problem, which(=because it ) was very difficult.
At last we got to the village, where(=and there) we took a rest.
Money is like a sixth sense without which you cannot make a com-
plete use of the other five.
関係代名詞: 格
人を表すwho だけは、関係詞節の中で果たす働きによって
主格(who), 所有格(whose), 目的格 (whom;(略式語)who)
の3つの格を持つ。
We want a clerk who can speak English. [主格]
Do you remember the girl who(m) we met the other day? [目的語]
A child whose parents are dead is called an orphan.[所有格]。
関係代名詞: 前置詞との関係
前置詞は、関係代名詞 who, which, what とともに用いられる場合、節の前に
置いても、終わりに置いてもよい。
that の場合は、必ず節の終わりに置く。
関係代名詞が省略された場合は、節の終わりに置く。
以下の文では後ろになるほど格式ばった言い方になる。
This is the man I spoke of yesterday.(こちらが昨日お話しした人です)
= This is the man that I spoke of yesterday.
= This is the man who I spoke of yesterday.
= This is the man whom I spoke of yesterday.
= This is the man of whom I spoke yesterday.
Do you remember the address you sent the letter to?
= Do you remember the address that you sent the letter to?
= Do you remember the address which you sent the letter to?
= Do you remember the address to which you sent the letter
関係代名詞: Who, Which
関係代名詞 "which" は物を参照する時使う 。 "who" は人を参照する時使う。
The magazine which is on the desk is an old one.
The man who called you is in the outer office.
"Which" では、主格と目的格は同形。
The book which is on the desk is an old one.
The book which you orderedjust arrived.
"Who" は、目的格 "whom" をもつ。 "whom" は、直接目的語、間接目的語、前置
詞の目的語として使われる。
The girl whom you saw is my sister.
The man to whom you spoke is here now.
関係代名詞: that
that は、
(1)人および物・事柄を表す先行詞を受け、制限用法だけに用いられる。
which よりはやや(略式語)的な言い方。
(2)物を表す先行詞にall, every, only, single, no, 形容詞の最上級、序
数詞などがつくとき�$ 先行詞自体が all, 形容詞の最上級、序数詞であるとき
用いられる�!
しかし、先行詞が人を表す語であるときは who が普通。
関係形容詞 relative adjective
関係代名詞のwhat, which, whatever, whicheverが形容詞的に用いられるとき
に関係形容詞と呼ばれる
関係副詞 relative adverb
副詞と接続詞の働きを兼ねる語。
when, where, why, how が主。 whether や whence が用いられることもある。
関係副詞は形容詞節を導く。その節が限定する語が先行詞。
関係副詞は、先行詞なしで用いられることがある:
That is why (= the reason why)I can't go.
(それが私の行けない理由です)
さらに、関係詞節が先行詞を限定する制限用法:
1945 is the year when World War II ended.
(1945年は第二次世界対戦の終わった年です)
関係詞節が先行詞を受けてそれを説明する非制限用法:
Finally he reached London, where he met an old friend of his.
(とうとう彼はロンドンに到着し、そこで彼は旧友に会った)

再帰代名詞 REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
再帰代名詞は:
myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves,
themselves.
(1) 再起的用法(reflexive use): 再帰的に、主語をrefer back する。
The man shot himself.
She burned herelf badly.
(2) 強調的用法(Emphatic use) : 文中の人を強調する。
Imyself will do the work.
Helen herself will cook the meals.
(3) 慣用的用法(idiomatic use) : 前置詞 "by," とともに使い 、"alone"
あるいは、"without help" の意味をもたす。
She lives by herself in a furnished room.
He prefers to study by himself.

(1)存在、動き、をあらわす。
(2)動詞は、それを「修飾/限定」する要素を伴う。
自動詞 intransitive verb

自動詞 intransitive verb
目的語をとらない動詞。完全自動詞(complete −−)と不完全自動詞
(incomplete −−)がある。多くは、ある時は完全自動詞、他の時は不完全自動
詞となる。
完全自動詞は<S+)V> 主格補語をとらないもの。
Birds fly.<V> 鳥は飛ぶ
I am here, Mr.Smith. <V+副詞> スミスさん、私はここにいますよ
Finally the party arrived at the village.<V+前置詞+名詞>
不完全自動詞は<(S+)V+C> 主格補語をとるもの。
Robert is a student. <V+C(名詞)> ロバートは学生です
It's me. <V+C(代名詞)> それは私です
He looks sad. <V+C(形容詞)> 彼は悲しそうな顔をしている
She kept crying all day. <V+C(現在分詞)> 彼女は一日中泣き続けた。
不完全自動詞の主なるものは
be(...である), become(...になる), get(...になる), grow(...になる),
keep(ずっと...する), look(...に見える), prove(...ということがわかる),
remain(...のままである), seem(...にみえる)など。
他動詞 transitive verb
目的語をとる動詞をいう。
目的格補語をとらないものを完全他動詞(complete transitive verb),目的格補
語をとるものを不完全他動詞と呼ぶ。

不完全他動詞の主なものは
believe(...が〜だと信ずる), call(...を〜と呼ぶ), elect(...を〜に選ぶ),
feel(...が〜するのを感じる), get, have(...に〜させる, 〜をしてもらう),
hear(...が〜するのを聞く), keep(...を〜にしておく), leave(...を〜のまま
にしておく), let(...に〜させる), make(...を〜にする, ...に〜させる),
see(...が〜するのを見る), think(...を〜と思う)等。
自動詞 と 他動詞
多くの動詞は、両型を取る。但し、意味の異なること多い。
She always wears blue.
He ware glasses.
Time wears away.
gear has worn down.
授与動詞 dative verb
give, send, bring, tell, write, make, lend, show などの動詞は、しばしば、
直接目的語の外、人名とか人称代名詞によって表わされる間接目的語をもつ。
この間接目的語は、「誰かに、または誰かのために、ある事をする」ことを表わす。
間接目的語の位置:
間接目的に直接目的が続く時は、前置詞 "to" か "for" を使う。前置詞を使う
時は、間接目的が直接目的に先行する。
He sent her flowers. He sent flowers to her.
He gave me the money. He gave the money to me.
間接目的語がtoで言いかえられる授与動詞では、受身の文が2つできる。
forで言いかえられる文では、直接目的語を主語とした受身の文のみてきる。
句動詞 pharase verb とは
二つ以上の語がまとまって1語の動詞のような働きをするもの。普通、動詞に
副詞: down, off, out, up
前置詞: at, for, with
が結び付いて1語の動詞と同じ働きをする。日常的な表現でよく用いる。
内部構成から2型に分類。
A「動詞+副詞(+前置詞)」の型
1.<自動詞+副>: come out(咲く)
2.<自動詞+副>: take off (脱ぐ)
3.<自動詞+副+前>: put up with (..を我慢する) ○他動詞と見なす
B「動詞++前置詞」の型
4.<自動詞+前>: look for (...を捜す) ○他動詞と見なす
5.<他動詞+前>: take ...for〜(...を〜だと思う)
動詞と副詞の結合
(動詞)break, bring ,call, carry, come, cut, do, draw, fall, find, fix,
get,give, go, hand, have, hold, keep, knock, lay, leave, let, look, make,
move, pass, pay, pick, play, pull, push, put, run, see, send, set, shut,
sit, stand, stick,take, think, throw, turn, work, write
(副詞)about, across, along, around, aside, away, back, behind, by, down,
forth, forward, in, off, on, out, over, round, through, togrther, under,
up
副詞を目的語の前後いずれにも置ける。例:
He took off his coat.<V+副+O>
=He took his cort off. <V+O+副>(彼は上着を脱いだ)
ただし、目的語が人称代名詞のように情報価値が低いときは<V+O+副>の順。
例外として
副詞が目的語の「後」に固定されている場合。<V+O+副>
Get your wet clothes off. <V+名�%代+off>(ぬれた服を脱げ)
副詞が目的語の「前」に固定されている場合。<V+副+O>
They did not give up hope. <V+up+O> (彼らは望みを捨て
なかった)
がある。 こうした語順の制限は句動詞の意味と関連する。
《この場合でも目的語が代名詞なら原則どおり<V+O+副>の語順となる》
動詞と前置詞の結合
前置詞のみ: after, at, for, into, with
前置詞/副詞: across, along, around, by, in, on, over, through
このとき、目的語の位置は常に変わらない。例:

構成要素の動詞が自動詞であっても、目的語をとっているため他動詞とみなす。
通常、1語の他動詞と異なり受身形は用いない。
例外:

should/ought/must may/might would/could
SHOULD/OUGHT(Present Form)
"should/ought" 多かれ少なかれ同じ意味をもち、交換可能。
しかし、"should" の方が "ought" より一般的。
"should/ought" はどちらも、強制 (obligation) を含む。
He should spend more time on his homework.
He ought to spend more on his homework.
You should not smoke so much.
You ought not to smoke so much.
"should/ought" は、少々否定的傾向(negative force )をもつ: ひとは、あ
る事をすべきてある。しかし、それが出来ないかもしれない。
この点で、"should/ought" は、"must" と違う。"must" は、完全に肯定的
(positive) な意味合いを持ち、殆ど強制的にそうなることを意味している。
SHOULD/OUGHT (Past Form)
"should/ought" は、過去形を持つ。しばしば過去の事象に使われる。
過去形は、助動詞 have と主動詞の過去分詞を使う。
過去形においては、"should/ought" は、完全に否定的な力を持つ。「ある事を
やるべきであったが、やれなかった」また、「ある事をやってはならないのに
やってしまった」ことを意味する。
You should have sent them a telegram (but you did not).
I should have studied before my examinaiton (but I did not)
You ought not to have said that to him.
MAY (Present Form)
助動詞 "may" は2つの異なる意味を持っている。
(1) 許可を表わす。
You may smoke here. (i.e. You have smoke here.)
(2) 「疑い (doubt)」あるいは「可能な未来の行為 (possible future ac-
tion)」を
表わす。
He may leave tomorrow.
(i.e. It is possible that he will leave tomorow.)
MUST HAVE / MAY HAVE (Past Form)
must と may は過去形を持つ。助動詞 have と主動詞の過子分詞を使う。
この形は、過去における色々な程度の probability か possibility を示す:
"must have" は、むしろ、過去における強い 見込み(probability) を表わす。
"may have" は、単なる可能性 (possiblity) を表わす。
Mr. Reese must have gone home.
(That is, it is probable or seems clear that he has gone home.)
His office is locked.
Mr. Reese may have gone home.
(That is, it is possible that he has gone home .)
His office is locked.
副詞 adverb
-lyで終わるものが多い。
動詞・形容詞・他の副詞・文全体(時に名詞)を修飾する語。
動詞を修飾 :
He spoke slowly. 彼はゆっくり話した
She ran fast. 彼女は速く走った
形容詞を修飾:
He was a wondefully good speaker. 彼は実に立派な話し手だった
The scenery is very beautiful. その景色はとても美しい
副詞を修飾:
He spoke wonderfully well. 彼は素晴らしく上手に話した
文全体を修飾 :
The car is going very fast.自動車はとても速く走っている
Unfortunately, he died a year later. 不幸にも彼は1年後に死んだ

「if 節」と、それに対する答えを持つ「主節」とからなる。
「if 節」の時制(tense)は、「主節」のそれより1段階遅らせる。

同様に、接続詞 until, when, as soon as, before, unless, as long as,
while によって副節が導かれる時、副節内の行動が未来に生じるものでも、現
在形を使う。
If Henry comes(not will come), I will tell him about it.
When Henry comes (not will come), I will tell him about it.
As soon as Henry comes, I will tell him about it.
I will wait here until Henry comes.
THE SUBJUNCTIVE AFTER WISH
動詞 "wish" は、通常、「本当でない」、または「事実に反する」状況 を示す。
それで、仮定態と同等の態 を伴う。
それで、"unreal" 条件時のように、現在の行動を示すのに過去形を用いる。過
去の行動を示すのに過去完了を用いる。
I wish it would stop raining.(Future)
I wish john were here now.(Present)

これらの型は、行動を「止める/始める」ように、丁寧な命令を与える手段と
して使う。

III. 文: 正書法/句読点
PUNCTUATION: コンマ
"non-restrictive" 節 を区切るのにコンマをつかえ。
"non-restrictive" 節とは、その節が修飾する単語にとって意義あるいは確認
の必要が無い節。換言すれば、それは丸括弧内にいれることができる節。
"restrictive" 節には、句読点はいらない。
(Non-restrictive) Dr. Smith, who is clever, makes much money.
(Restrictive) Any doctor who is clever makes much money.
(Non-restrictive) Chicago, where we met, was then a pretty
little town.
(Restrictive) The place where we met was a pretty little town.
PUNCTUATION: コンマ
連なる語、句を離すためにコンマをつかえ。
We need books, pencils, chairs, and desks.
We played tennis, took long walks, went swimming.
データ、住所、地理的な項目を仕切るのにコンマを使え。
