Our department clinically manages the etensive field of head and neck in addition to conventional objects (ear, nose, mouth), ecept brain, eye, and tooth with department of Head and Neck Surgery. Surgical management of diseases are positively employed, as well as treatment of functional disturbances of audiological and vestibular apparatus, immunological complications like allergic rhinitis, speech and swallowing problems, and so on. In our graduate course, various researches are going on, concerning subjects mentioned below.

■Education
　In the class, diseases of oto-rhino-laryngology are systematically lectured, including detailed anatomy and physiology. In the practical training, actual clinical managements are experienced at the outpatient clinic, the ward, and the operating room.
Undergraduate Course
　As for graduate course, the following educations and researches are supplied; molecular biology of hearing loss, morphology of the ear and nose, electrophysiology of hearing, clinical dysequilibrium and postural control, immunology of allergic rhinitis, and so on. In the clinical province, computer-aided surgery of the field of oto-rhino-laryngology are positively employed to advance the prognosis.
Graduate Course
■Research Subjects
　Incidence of congenital severe hearing loss is at least one in 1000 birth, half of which can be attributed to genetic factors. Up to now, more than 100 loci for non-syndromic deafness have been mapped, and more than 30 deafness genes have been identified. However, many genetic factors for hearing and deafness remains unknown. We investigate the patients with non-syndromic deafness for the mutation in known deafness genes and for the identifications of new deafness genes.
Molecular biology of hearing and deafness
　Macroscopic and microscopic morphological study is investigated in the field of oto-rhino-laryngology with emphasis on clinical application. Available techniques are from conventional one to computer-aided histological study, including light microscope and immunohistochemistry.
Morphology
　The mechanisms of auditory and vestibular system are investigated focusing on the ion homeostasis. Nasal allergy focused on the arachidonic acid metabolism is also another interest. In addition, developmental study in the inner ear and nose has been beginning. These are mainly studied by using antigen retrieving and signal amplification immunohistochemical method. Many of these results have been presented and published internationally, and have given important knowledge for the clinical treatment of auditory and vestibular disease and nasal allergy.
Histochemistry and Cell biology
　In the rhinology, the research is carried out in respect of treating patients with seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. The argon plasma laser coagulation therapy of the inferior turbinate, immunotherapy in the cedar antigen and the pharmacotherapies have been undergone, and the availability of these treatments are statistically evaluated.In addition, the transitions of the chemical mediators by these treatments are immunologically analyzed.
Rhinology / Immunology
　The electrophysiological study of various congenic mice, that were made in order to study the gene of the deafness, are analyzed using by ABRs and/or DPOAEs.These researches are carried out in order to establish the new animal model for the human deafness.
Audiology
　In outpatient clinic, various disease of equilibrium are managed, including disturbances of peripheral vestibular apparatus and central nervous system. In addition, new methods of medical, surgical, and rehabilitational treatments have been positively employed. Further, basic research of postural control are proceeded along following themes; perturbation of balance of normal subjects delivered by various sensory input, interaction between visual vestibular and proprioceptive input, and so on.
Posture and equilibrium
　Most common pharyngeal and laryngeal disease, including pharyngitis, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, snore, laryngitis and swallowing disturbance, have been clinically investigated in order to seek appropriate treatment. The efficacy of argon plasma coagulation treatment for pharyngeal disease has been employed.
