Welcome
Junji Tagami,
D.D.S., Ph.D.
Professor and Chair
Cariology and Operative Dentistry
Tokyo Medical and Dental University possesses the longest history as a national dental university in Japan. We have contributed to the progress of science and education through presenting a number of world leading graduates in the field of dentistry. Many of their achievements are now recognized as global standards in the field of dental research and clinical practice.
We, at the Cariology and Operative Dentistry, believe that the ultimate goal of the oral health care programs is to provide well-being of the patients. In order to achieve this goal, besides the clinical training that we offer to the licensed graduate students, high-caliber research projects are being carried out aimed at developing, enhancing and evaluation of the materials and techniques in conservative dentistry; particularly for adhesives, caries prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and oral health maintenance.
Cariology and Operative Dentistry is a home to the late professor "Takao Fusayama", who developed the "Caries Detector" for removal of the caries and promoted "Total-etch technique" and other restorative techniques using adhesive resin composite for the minimally invasive caries treatment.
Our group, consisting of members of the faculty, staff and graduate students, is among the international leaders in the ongoing dental research. The recent "International Research Center for Molecular Science in Tooth and Bone Disease" at our Global COE Program (succeeding the COE program) is a core for our professional research where dental sciences and medical sciences meet. I would hereby like to extend an invitation to those fellows and prospect graduate students interested in perusing high-level research and gaining an insight into modern concepts to join our international team of scientists.
Sincerely;
Junji Tagami
Nov 2010- The bulletin of "Cariology and Operative Dentistry Alumni (Vol. 1)" was published. The bulletin is named "The Big Dream", which simply reads "Time" in the Japanese Kanji characters.
This name is derived from the words of Prof. Junji Tagami in the farewell remarks of graduating students "wish you a big dream". This bulletin includes reprts on the latest academic and
research activities of Cariology and Operative Dentistry, and our new department members.

The department was established as "First Conservative Dentistry Department" in 1963, under supervision of the late Prof. Fusayama. In 1982, Prof. Hosoda became the department chairman. Prof. Tagami has been head of the department since 1995. The department changed to "Cariology and Operative Dentistry" in 2000, as a section of department of restorative sciences.
