“Report: Taipei Medical University and Tokyo Medical and Dental University Joint Symposium 2018”

TMDU hosted the fourth “TMU-TMDU Joint Symposium” on March 24th, 2018.
This symposium, which has been held regularly since 2013, provides our universities a vital opportunity to deepen our relationship and to exchange cutting-edge information and experience regarding medical and dental research.

The first symposium was held at TMU in November of 2013 on the theme of “Advances of Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine.” Thereafter, the symposium has alternated between our two universities every year and a half. The second symposium entitled “Preventive Medicine and Dentistry” was held in March of 2015, and the third symposium on “Infection, immunity and Allergy” was held in November of 2016.

This fourth symposium featured research themes on carcinogenesis, cancer stem cell, and cancer diagnose and treatment. After the opening remarks from Dean Masanobu Kitagawa from the Faculty of Medicine, TMDU, and Chairman Wen-Chang Chang from TMU, two speakers from each university gave a lecture on each theme. Each of the lectures proved to be very interesting, and listeners actively engaged in lively discussions during the Q&A period.

There were twelve invited speakers, all well-known, active researchers in their respective cancer research fields. We invited the following six professors from TMU-- Assist. Prof. Szu-Yuan Wu from Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Prof. Kuan-Chou Chen from Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, College of Medicine, Vice Dean/Prof. Win-Ping Deng from College of Oral Medicine, Assist. Prof. Tze-Sian Chan from Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Director/Prof. Yuan-Soon Ho from Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, College of Medicine and Prof. Ching-Yu Yen from College of Oral Medicine.
The following six professors from TMDU gave lectures-- Prof. Minoru Tanabe from Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Prof. Yasuhisa Fujii from Department of Urology, Vice President/Prof. Tetsuya Taga from Department of Stem Cell Regulation, Prof. Shinji Tanaka from Department of Molecular Oncology, Prof. Johji Inazawa from Department of Molecular Cytogenetics and Prof. Mari Kannagi from Department of Immunotherapeutics.

There were sixty participants all together, including 15 invited guests from Taiwan (including the TMU speakers). The symposium concluded with closing remarks by TMDU Vice President Tetsuya Taga and TMU Dean Shih-Chin Chen from TMU.

We look forward to continuing a wide variety of active exchange between TMU and TMDU in the future.
