Message from the Senior Deputy Director

From April 1, 2023, I will assume the role of supervising the "Division of Clinical Dentistry" as the Senior Deputy Director of the Hospital, continuing from last year. The wave of Covid-19, which has been around for more than three years, has finally settled down, and fiscal 2023 will start with no Covid-19 hospitalized patients. It won't arrive before corona, but many patients are visiting the Division of Clinical Dentistry.
With the start of hospital integration on October 1, 2021, medical staff including doctors, dentists, nurses, and dental hygienists, as well as clerical staff, are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of collaboration between medicine and dentistry in terms of medical treatment, education, and research.
My specialty is periodontal disease, and I have been researching the relationship between periodontal disease and medical diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis for quite some time. By curing periodontal disease, inserting dentures, and restoring oral function, systemic diseases such as diabetes can be improved, and the physical condition of patients who have been suffering from systemic illness can be improved. I have come to realize the importance of "total health care through medical-dental collaboration".
Furthermore, Tokyo Medical and Dental University is scheduled to be merged with Tokyo Institute of Technology within 2024 to become "Institute of Science Tokyo (provisional name)". Our hospital will continue to devote ourselves to our mission of providing the world's highest level of total health care by further improving the level of today's medical care and developing unprecedented new medical care by cooperating not only with medicine and dentistry but also with engineering.
In order to meet the diverse needs of our patients, Division of Clinical Dentistry offers “Sports Dentistry”, “Psychosomatic Dentistry Clinic”, “Maxillofacial Prosthetics,” “Speech Clinic”, “Dental Allergy”, “Dysphagia Rehabilitation”, “Fresh Breath Clinic”, “Orofacial Pain Clinic”, “Temporomandibular Disorders Clinic”, etc. In addition, there is also the “Center for Advanced Interdisciplinary Dentistry” where a group of specialists with their own specialties approach each patient comprehensively and provide high-level dental treatment in each field. Please make use of it.
Last but not least, our hospital is not only a special treatment hospital, but also a "medical education institution" for dentists. We ask for the patient's understanding and cooperation for the clinical training of dentistry students and dentists, which is conducted safely and reliably under the supervision of a dentist who has sufficient experience and skills.

Hiroshi Nitta
Senior Deputy Director, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital.
