Prof. Junji Tagami, Dean of Faculty of Dentistry

The School for Dental Technicians is a specialized training college attached to Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Faculty of Dentistry.

The origin of the school dates back to 1929 when a training course for dental technicians was established at Tokyo Higher Dental School, the predecessor of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, as the one and only national institution for the training of dental technicians. In 1952 it was reorganized in the present form as the School for Dental Technicians attached to the Faculty of Dentistry. The school, therefore, enjoys the longest history and tradition being the oldest national dental technicians training school, contributing a great deal to the development of dental technology in Japan.

The school is located in Tokyo Medical and Dental University's Yushima Campus on a hill in the Ochanomizu area which is an academic and cultural center with many cultural assets such as "Yushima Seido," universities, and university hospitals. With such geographic advantages, Tokyo Medical and Dental University attracts many foreign scholars and visitors and constitutes a center for exchange of scientific information.

After you enter the school, you will start student life in the Ochanomizu area: attending lectures, laboratory practice and extra-curricular activities. Since our clinical practice course is conducted at the best-equipped university dental hospital in Japan, students are able to undergo quality practical training directly linked to real patient care. During this clinical training, students receive direct instruction and guidance from experienced faculty, consisting of dentists and dental technicians.

As you know, modern dentistry has advanced remarkably. In particular, the recent development of regenerative dentistry has brought about major innovations in dental treatment procedures. In dental clinics, optimal treatment will not be done solely by a dentist, rather, it will be administered by a coordinated team of dentists, dental hygienists and dental technicians working in close cooperation. Applicants for the school are expected to bear the responsibility of working as a professional member of the dental team, contributing to quality dental care.

You will have an important role to play in 21st-century dental care. We hope to welcome you as an important human resource for future dentistry, trusting that you will elevate further the level of Japanese dental care and effectively respond to the varied needs of society in the future. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you at the school.
