During The 22nd International Ornithological Congress held in Durban in August of 1998, John C. Wingfield and Bengt Silverin had a Roundtable Discussion on Field Endocrinology. Many atteded discussion and exchanged information about present states and problems of Environmental Endocrinology. Our major concerns were to make a strong body which promotes studies of Environmental Endocrinology worldwide and to exchange information among investigators who are interested in Environmental Endocrinology.
At this point close to the end of 20th century, we are more and more urged to aware of environments and their deterioration by human influences. Endocrine disruptoers are its extremes. However we do not know much about environment and endocrinology. We should study more precisely mechanisms of endocrine control mechanisms, environmental influences on the control mechanisms, mechansisms controlling a microhabitat in each species, behavioral and hormonal interactions in a certain environment, and so on. To do so, it is essential to have information.
As a first step toward a future development, we create a homepage of Environmental Endocrinology to support information exchange among us.
