This course is a general biology course taught in English.

The content in this course complements material taught in your regular biology course [生物学(細胞・遺伝子)]. The purpose of this course is to prepare motivated students to learn and review biology concepts through English. The course should support learning of your regular biology course content.

This course is recommended for students with TOEFL 500+.
授業の目的、概要等  
The purpose of this course is to build on your molecular and cellular biology knowledge through class discussions and self-directed study of English reading materials.

Goals
1) Build science vocabulary in English
2) Improve English oral discussion ability on biology topics
3) Present on current trends in biology primary literature
4) Summarize in written forms important concepts in biology
授業の到達目標  
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

1) write short summaries about biology concepts in English

2) Skim and scan through primary and secondary literature in English to learn important biology concepts.

3) Use reliable sources of primary and secondary literature of biology available in English

4) Communicate in class discussion in English on biology concepts

授業方法  
Students will listen to teacher mini-lectures and work in small groups to learn about biology topics each week.

For each topic, there will be the following components.

1) At home reading assignment on a biology subtopic

2) At home literature search on biology subtopic

3) Summary of teacher mini-lecture and suptopic

4) Small group work discussion on each subtopic

5) Group presentation of each subtopic with student Q/A
授業内容  
Selected topics covered in regular the biology course taught in Japanese [生物学(細胞・遺伝子)] will be reviewed and discussed in this course.
成績評価の方法  
Students will work in small groups to complete class tasks.

For each topic, there will be the following components.

1) Written summaries of teacher mini-lectures and suptopics each week 30%

2) Performance on small group presentations of each subtopic and ability to answer questions 30%

3) Final individual presentation on a current trend in biology 20%

4) Final written examination on all biology topics covered 20%

**Note: Purchase of this textbook is NOT required. There is a copy available in the Kounodai Library. Reading materials will be provided by the instructor.

You will need to access the course folder for reading materials during each lesson. You should bring a laptop or tablet each week.
