Outline

If Japan is to become a world leader in the development of medicine and dentistry in the 21st-century, it will have to focus more and more on clinically-oriented research covering etiology, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and patient's QOL. In order to effectively address these various issues, Tokyo Medical and Dental University has established a new graduate school through the integration of the former graduate school of medicine and that of dentistry.

At the university, medicine and dentistry cooperate and compensate for each other in both education and research: Dental researchers/dentists are taught medicine and medical researchers/physicians imparted with a knowledge of dentistry; we also promote advanced research in both fields, even to the point of initiating new interdisciplinary research projects.

The results of the research will impact greatly on clinical medicine/dentistry, enabling the delivery of medical/dental services that the Japanese people demand. Our graduates acquire not only knowledge and skills but also an ability to deliver comprehensive medical/dental care in response to people's needs,.

Our new graduate school is characterized by close linkage between medicine and dentistry, between basic and clinical sciences, and strong interdisciplinary research. Our mission is to educate world-class clinically-minded researchers with an ability to work in interdisciplinary fields and health professionals with a broad knowledge of medicine and dentistry.
